A Guide To Memory
Centered around Fergus Craik and Robert Lockhart’s 1972 Levels of Processing (LOP) model, A Guide to Memory grounds, provokes, and engraves.
Inspired by the performative event scores within George Brecht’s 1963 Water Yam, three sets of prompts correspond to the layers within the LOP triangle: structural, phonetic, and semantic. The open-ended instructions act as an experiment on memory retention, specifically on the evening of the exhibition, April 25th, 2025. Site-specific sculptures made of found objects from Schoolhouse reflect the triangular symbol of presence and stand as vessels for reflection. With a broken windowpane and drips of white paint, the materials themselves hold memory, furthering retentivity by inviting stillness and introspection.
